What is consciousness to Rumi Posted on February 3, 2021February 25, 2022 For centuries, scientists, philosophers, poets, and theologists have struggled to define consciousness and its role in our existence.Neuroscientists argue that consciousness is a product of brain electrical activity. Philosopher believes that consciousness is universal, and our consciousness is universal innate intelligence. Quantum physicist says that every part of an atom has consciousness or awareness.Like Rumi and many other mystic Sufi believe that consciousness is a language of the Heart and connected with universal intelligence, which is also called soul, being, or innate intelligence. In the eye of Theologist, consciousness is our soul created by God, and our body is occupied for a short period. But why not debate that consciousness originated from the Universal intelligence, which became a part of us with the first heartbeat? Our Heart has a brain compromised of over 40000 Neurons. The electromagnetic field created by the Heart is a thousand times larger than the field created by the brain. Scientists can measure this electromagnetic field six feet away from our bodies. The Heart and brain are the two organs that first form in the womb. And the first sign of life is created by the Heart’s first beat. We cannot fully understand if Rumi’s reference to the Heart is the same as consciousness, which is defined in many ways by scientists, philosophers, or believers of many faiths. But with, one can assume that Rumi’s reference was not to the physical Heart. But could he refer to the Heart’s electromagnetic field as scientists know it today? Could the electromagnetic field of the Heart be our soul or consciousness? Was Rumi talking about this energetic or nonphysical Heart? We may never know the exact meaning of the Heart in Rumi’s mind, but based on the interpretation of his poetry, it is safe to say when Rumi talks about the Heart, he refers to our soul or consciousness.
